Duration 1899 has its fair share of cryptic items, bugs Daniel (Aneurin Barnard) and Elliot (Flynn Edwards) use on board Kerberos It can surprise even the most discerning fan. This is because the series never gave us a clear explanation of these errors and what exactly they did. Still, enough clues are spread across the eight episodes of the series. 1899It’s the first season for us to put everything together and figure out what those bugs are. Despite this, the insects were simultaneously Maura (Emily Beecham) and his son and a concept from computer science.

How ‘1899’ Handles Bugs

in the first episode 1899, an insect leads Maura to Prometheus’ locker, where Elliot is locked. Daniel and Elliot also use the same bug multiple times to unlock locked doors, access one of the virtual rooms that house false memories, and even guide them through Kerberos as they evade Henry’s detection.Anton Lesser) associates. Later in the show, Maura uses an insect to go back to dig a well under her bed so she can return to her own memory and look for her father. Daniel also uses a bug to bring Ada (Screw Sjorslev) to her before using her shell to kill the girl and starting the events that led to the riot in Kerberos. In short, bugs are used to overcome one of the limitations of simulation by enforcing behavior that doesn’t seem like the intended part of the virtual landscape code.

It seems that the bug is just a tool that Daniel and Elliot can use to navigate the simulation whenever they want and overcome some of the obstacles of the virtual environment. More precisely, insects or insects are used to exhibit an undesirable behavior within the simulation. Like computer bugs, bugs break software and force it to do something that was not originally programmed.

Of course, bugs are often a by-product of programming and are born inside the software as the fruit of coding errors or unpredictable interactions between different parts of the code. Errors also often result in one type of undesirable behavior. Inside 1899But it looks like Daniel and Elliot are controlling the bugs and maybe including them in the simulation. So, if we wanted to use the right terminology, Daniel and Elliot would be using bugs as hacking tools, not bugs. This means that the bugs could be external code that Daniel introduced to manipulate the simulation in his favor.

Then again, 1899 It was created like a jigsaw puzzle that gives the spectator clues to unravel its secrets. Therefore, creators Rimje Fries and Baran Bo Odar I wanted to keep things simple since “bug” is a more accessible term to the average fan than “hack tool”.

Bugs can indeed be bugs, which means problems in the simulation code that its creator left behind. In this case, Daniel and Elliot did not create the insects, they just exploit them. Since Daniel and Elliot are one of the few who are aware that they are in a virtual world, this allows them to review the code and find flaws that they can use to their advantage. This would be the classic case where a bug turns into a feature. Either way, the important thing to remember before Season 2 1899 These insects cause unwanted behavior within the simulation, making them valuable tools for people trying to escape their virtual prison and return to the real world. However, besides being related to computer science, 1899beetles also have an in-universe explanation for their appearance.

How Are Insects Related to Maura’s Past?

While there’s still a lot we don’t know about Maura’s past, Season 1 1899 explains why the woman is trapped inside the simulation. In the real world, Maura is married to Daniel and they have a son together, Elliot. At one point, Elliot falls ill with a terminal illness. Unable to say goodbye to her son, Maura created the first simulation version of Elliot in which she kept her consciousness safe. Maura and Daniel often visit this simulation, extending their family life alongside their son. We still don’t know how Maura’s simulation turned into a prison for so many people or why it erased her own memory. However, the insect Daniel and Elliot used in the simulation is very similar to another insect from their past.

In one of Maura’s memories, we see the woman spending a cozy afternoon with her son. This afternoon, Elliot finds a bug that looks exactly the same as the bugs used in the simulation. Elliot wants to keep the bug in a box, and Maura tells the boy that the poor creature doesn’t deserve to live in prison. Elliot then asks how he knows the bug is safe and how he will watch it grow if he doesn’t keep it around. Maura tells her son she won’t know, but that doesn’t mean it’s okay to deprive another creature of its freedom. Ironically, after a few months or years, Maura will lock Elliot in her virtual box and completely forget her own advice.

We still don’t know exactly how the simulation works and how traumatic memories work. Kerberos‘Passengers have any relation to reality. However, the simulation seems to have been at least partially influenced by Maura’s memories, which makes sense since she created everything. Therefore, it would be fitting if the computer bugs that appeared in his code took the form of a bug he saw while spending time with Elliot. Inside the simulation, any piece of code is represented by an object, so it’s interesting to think that bugs can be represented by bugs. And if that’s the case, no insect is better than the one Maura used to teach Elliot a lesson she too must learn.

1899 is currently streaming on Netflix. Unfortunately, the broadcasting platform has not yet renewed the series.
