We still don’t know how Maura’s simulation turned into a prison for so many people or why it erased her own memory. However, the insect Daniel and Elliot used in the simulation is very similar to another insect from their past.
In one of Maura’s memories, we see the woman spending a cozy afternoon with her son. This afternoon, Elliot finds a bug that looks exactly the same as the bugs used in the simulation. Elliot wants to keep the bug in a box, and Maura tells the boy that the poor creature doesn’t deserve to live in prison. Elliot then asks how he knows the bug is safe and how he will watch it grow if he doesn’t keep it around. Maura tells her son she won’t know, but that doesn’t mean it’s okay to deprive another creature of its freedom. Ironically, after a few months or years, Maura will lock Elliot in her virtual box and completely forget her own advice.
We still don’t know exactly how the simulation works and how traumatic memories work. Kerberos‘Passengers have any relation to reality.
