Since its debut in April, Netflix’s Heart Stopping It brought a lot of joy to the audience from those who were already familiar with the source material and those who had just learned about the bizarre joy-centered story. based on Ali Osmangraphic novels, Heart Stopping Follows Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke), two teenagers whose blossoming friendship is starting to develop into something more. As it happens, Nick continues on his journey to discover his sexuality. The series was a quick hit with viewers, boosting the Netflix charts and getting quick refreshes for Seasons 2 and 3.
Following in the footsteps of the graphic novel, the adaptation brought a sweet and fresh breath to the romantic comedy genre and a much-needed piece of media for queer audiences looking for healthy content. Locke and Connor recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the impact of the series. Noting how unexpected the show’s demographic was, Locke said,
“I think we were all expecting a pretty young Generation Z audience. It’s what we didn’t expect millennials who watched the show and saw things they didn’t have when they were growing up. I think we’re saying ‘Heartstopper’ is so rare and so new. Let ‘Heartstopper’ go 15-20 years ago. I don’t think it was made even five years ago.”
Connor echoed this sentiment, noting that many queer media are “overwhelmingly negative.” to be able to express themselves. To be in love and not be judged for it. It’s so beautiful.” she likes it Heart Stopping to a “classic Hollywood romance”, something often reserved for straight-centric media. He thinks the show follows these familiar tropes, arguing that it’s an underrated aspect of the show.
“We have so many little references and imams about these. And, you know, the queer community has never had a classic Hollywood romance. So it’s nice to have this kind of thing where it’s a kiss and then a person stands up in heels. “There’s that moment in episode eight where we kiss in the hallway after sports day. Our main point was that it was like a proper Hollywood romantic kiss in slow motion. It’s very romantic.”
